Design Engineer – Steel Fabrication
Experience Level: Jr-level (2+ years)
CTC: 3 to 5 LPA
About the Role
We are seeking a detail-oriented Design Engineer to join our steel fabrication team. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing accurate, buildable design and detailing solutions for structural steel projects — from initial concept through to fabrication-ready drawings — ensuring designs meet engineering standards, client specifications, and project timelines.
Key Responsibilities
· Prepare detailed structural steel design drawings, including general arrangement (GA), fabrication, and erection drawings, using CAD/3D modeling software (e.g., AutoCAD, Tekla Structures, SolidWorks, or equivalent).
· Interpret architectural and structural drawings to develop accurate steel connection and member designs.
· Perform structural calculations for steel members, connections, and welds in accordance with relevant codes and standards (e.g., AISC, Eurocode, AS/NZS, IS codes as applicable).
· Liaise with clients, architects, structural engineers, and site teams to clarify design requirements and resolve technical queries.
· Produce Bills of Materials (BOM) and material take-offs (MTO) for fabrication and procurement.
· Coordinate with the fabrication shop and production team to ensure designs are practical, cost-effective, and manufacturable.
· Conduct design reviews and quality checks to ensure drawings are accurate and error-free before release to production.
· Manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring designs are completed within budget and schedule.
· Support site teams with technical queries, RFIs, and as-built modifications during erection.
· Stay current with industry codes, standards, and best practices in steel design and fabrication.
· Assist in value engineering to optimize designs for cost, weight, and constructability.
Required Qualifications & Skills
· Bachelor's degree/Diploma in Mechanical, Civil, or Structural Engineering (or related field).
· 2–6 years of experience in structural steel design/detailing within a fabrication or construction environment.
· Proficiency in CAD software such as AutoCAD, Tekla Structures, SolidWorks, or similar 3D modeling tools.
· Strong understanding of steel fabrication processes, welding symbols, and connection design.
· Familiarity with relevant structural design codes and standards.
· Ability to read and interpret structural and architectural drawings.
· Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
· High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
· Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams (engineering, production, site, procurement).
Preferred Qualifications
· Experience with structural analysis software (e.g., STAAD.Pro, ETABS, RISA).
· Knowledge of welding processes and NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) requirements.
· Prior experience in industries such as construction, oil & gas, infrastructure, or heavy engineering.
· Familiarity with ERP/PLM systems for BOM and production tracking.
Key Competencies
· Technical accuracy and attention to detail
· Time management and multitasking
· Effective communication with internal and external stakeholders
· Problem-solving and adaptability
· Team collaboration
